Lukaku Declares He Won’t Return to Chelsea

Romelu Lukaku has made it clear: a return to Chelsea is off the table. Speaking about his future in a recent interview, the Belgian striker stated unequivocally that he will not rejoin the Blues, despite growing interest from new manager Antonio Conte and club owner Roman Abramovich. Instead, Lukaku revealed that the clubs he admires most are Manchester United and Bayern Munich—two European giants he’s long admired for their attacking prowess.

Lukaku first joined Chelsea in 2011 but failed to secure a regular spot in the first team. He was loaned out to West Bromwich Albion and later to Everton, where he ultimately signed a permanent deal in 2014 for £28 million. Since then, he has flourished, scoring 25 goals across all competitions this season alone—firmly establishing himself as one of the Premier League’s most lethal strikers.

The Sun recently reported that Conte sees Lukaku as a key reinforcement for Chelsea’s attack, with Abramovich also backing the move. But when asked about the possibility of returning to Stamford Bridge, Lukaku said firmly, “No, absolutely not. That chapter is closed.”

Instead, the Belgian international shared his admiration for Manchester United and Bayern Munich. “When I was young, I was inspired by the attacking style of those two clubs,” Lukaku said. “To be linked with teams like that shows that people are watching me. The rest, I’ll leave to my agent.”

Interestingly, Lukaku also addressed the possibility of working again with José Mourinho, who is widely rumored to take over at Manchester United. Despite having been sidelined by Mourinho during their time at Chelsea—where the Portuguese coach favored veterans like Samuel Eto’o over the young Lukaku—he expressed openness to a reunion.

“Of course I would,” Lukaku said when asked about playing for Mourinho again. “People say I could convince him now, but I don’t think that’s even necessary. Three years ago, when I was 20, I wasn’t ready for a top club. But after a few strong seasons, including this one, everything is different now.”

Lukaku turns 23 in May and appears ready to make a big move this summer. With top-tier clubs circling—including Manchester United, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, and Paris Saint-Germain—Everton may struggle to hold on to their star forward.
