Carlo Ancelotti’s tenure at Bayern Munich is off to a promising start, as the team has racked up three consecutive victories in their preseason friendlies. While these early wins provide a solid foundation, true insight into Ancelotti’s control over the squad will likely emerge only when Bayern faces top-tier opposition.
In their latest warm-up match against sixth-division side Landshut, Bayern cruised to a comfortable 3–0 win. Despite the clear disparity in skill level, Ancelotti took the game seriously, fielding a strong starting lineup that included Lahm, Alaba, and Ribéry. Xabi Alonso was the only notable absentee. Before kickoff, both teams observed a moment of silence to honor the victims of the Munich shooting incident that occurred the previous Friday. Security at the stadium was significantly heightened due to the tragic event.
This match had originally been scheduled for October of the previous year during the international break, but was canceled due to injuries within the Bayern squad. Former sporting director Matthias Sammer had previously pledged that once the league schedule allowed, the match would be rescheduled—and Bayern delivered on that promise. Over 8,000 fans turned out to watch the game in person.
Although Bayern dominated possession, they struggled to convert chances early on. By the 30th minute, the score remained 0–0, prompting commentary from Isar TV to note that the Landshut goalkeeper had set an unofficial record by keeping a clean sheet for 30 minutes against a Bundesliga giant. Under Pep Guardiola, Bayern consistently overwhelmed weaker teams—one of the main reasons behind their Bundesliga dominance. Ancelotti, however, is known for occasional stumbles against smaller clubs, making these kinds of matchups an important test of his tactical leadership.
Fortunately for the Italian manager, this youthful Bayern squad avoided any embarrassing slip-ups. Ribéry opened the scoring in the 34th minute, showing impressive form in the absence of the injured Robben. Just five minutes later, Alaba doubled the lead with a powerful strike from the left side of the box. In the second half, Ancelotti rotated in several young players, yet Bayern maintained control. Hägler sealed the result with an 80th-minute goal.
While many youngsters featured in the match, their chances of breaking into the starting XI for the upcoming season remain slim. The game served more as a learning experience than a serious audition. Among the youth on display were Mario Götze’s younger brother and the son of former Bayern player Christian Tanne.
Earlier in the preseason, Bayern had already beaten Lippstadt and claimed a 1–0 victory over Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City. With the Landshut win in the books, the squad now heads to the United States for their international tour. It’s there, facing tougher opponents, that Ancelotti’s Bayern may finally be put to the real test.
